Update of 6 July 2004 Several things

Shihan Isaac's Tournament on 17 July 2004 down in Jacksonville, NC.

Testing should be soon.

My going away party was on 26 June 2004. I had a blast and hope everyone else did too. Thanks to everyone that came and to everyone that helped out w/ supplies or preparation. There are some pictures on my website.
Update of 15 March 2004 Two notes: calligraphy and seminar in SC.

On Saturday, the 27th of March 2004 after the regular Saturday class, we will have the calligraphy seminar. Machiko-san has been able to work out her schedule to teach us every few weeks. I met with her, and talked about what we could do for the supplies for a whole class. She suggested improvising with some dishes instead of inkstones and I have some pillow cases that we can use as mats underneath our paper. I've found some brushes here in town, and I'll probably have to order some ink from the internet. We decided that if people were really interested in shodo, then we could get some inkstones and charcoal type ink bars later. (However, if you have your own set, then go ahead and bring them in.) I'm still tracking down all of the items that we need, so I don't have an exact cost yet. I would estimate from $10 to $20 per person to get the brushes, ink, dishes (inkstones), paperweights, etc for the dojo. After the initial cost of purchasing the hardware, we would just have the cost of keeping up our ink supply. If you haven't talked to me yet about doing this, then definitely let me know if you are interested.

The weekend of the 16th, 17th, & 18th of April 2004, we will have a seminar in Greenville, South Carolina. More details will be rolled out in class.
News of the tournament! We had a good time and hopefully got some people interested in the realistic self defense. There were only four competitors who happened to be us: Nick, Sam, Mike, and Allen, but we had a lot of judges who seemed to enjoy our demonstration. LaMont Sensei gave away the can of attacks to furthur promote the competition. Picture.

Another interesting note: calligraphy. I'm diligently pestering our contact over at the Glenwood Branch Library to find us a teacher. She found a woman, Machiko-san, who's mother is a licensed calligraphy sensei. Unfortunately, however, she told me in an email that she would not have time for our class because of other engagements. I responded with questions to make sure that we are on the same page about the class, etc., but I have not heard anything back from her yet.

Tournament! 28 February 2004 in Jacksonville, NC with Shihan Larry Isaac. Shihan Isaac has all of the details on his website. Realistic Self Defense is mentioned this time, so hopefully there will be some good competition.

Wouldn't it be cool if you had your own representation of the kanji for aikido? I've talked briefly with the English tutoring coordinator at the Greensboro Public Library (who happens to be Japanese) about finding someone who could help us learn how to write Japanese calligraphy and characters. She indicated that there were many Japanese students in Greensboro and I was thinking that we could probably take them out to eat in exchange for their services. I've probably talked to most people, but if not, then let me know if you are interested. The more people, the better. I'll keep everyone updated.

Congratulations to Sam and Charlie on their recent promotion to 5th kyu and good luck to Anthony on his 7th kyu test.
